St. Margaret Mary’s Early Childhood Program provides a nurturing and stimulating learning environment. The preschool classrooms follow a theme-based, hands-on curriculum allowing students to play while exploring new concepts and skills in preparation for kindergarten. Each theme includes opportunities for reading readiness, writing and math skills, creating through art and building with manipulatives. Daily learning centers strive to meet the academic, social and physical growth of each student while encouraging independent learning. In addition, students participate in computers, Spanish, art, gym and music classes, as well as daily outdoor play. Weekly visits to our Discovery Learning Lab provide scientific exploration with a special focus in the spring on raising baby chicks.
St. Margaret Mary’s kindergarten program continues to build on the skills gained in preschool and fosters a love of learning. The McGraw-Hill ‘Treasures’ Reading program has been implemented and provides stimulating literacy based units. Students participate in both daily shared and guided reading activities and experiment with phonics skills, word building, sentence structure, comprehension strategies, and creative writing activities. The Everyday Math program is practiced throughout the day. Students are actively involved in the learning process through a balanced approach of learning and play. Daily learning centers accommodate various learning styles and provide opportunities for students to practice new skills while having fun. Kindergarten students attend gym, music, Spanish, and computer classes. Our young students also visit the Discovery Learning Lab with a special interest in ownership and responsibility of tending to the school’s kinder- ‘garden’.
