The Epiphany of the Lord – Year B

Today’s Gospel, Matthew 2:1-12, retells the story of the wise men from the east who went in search for the New King of the Jews and arrived in Jerusalem. However, these visitors, the pagan magi from the east, surprised the father, mother and the special tiny Baby with their coming.

The wise men set out on the journey based on their intuition and some “direction” from a star. Theirs was a journey of faith in the deep darkness of the night. And yet they went willingly. Compounding to difficulties of the journey they lost sight of the star. Natural knowledge and wisdom could take them only so far. They had to seek help from King Herod who in turned consulted the experts in the Scriptures.

The world of religion and the world of politics met to direct the magi to Bethlehem. It seemed that the wise men had no fear for their journey. They faced the difficulties and harshness with open heart and mind. They were willing to accept all things in order to achieve their only goal - to find the child. When they found the child, they did him homage. “Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2: 11b)

When they had enjoyed the presence of the child, Jesus, and his parents, they packed up once again to resume the perilous journey, returning home by a different route.

Let us all reflect on some questions about ourselves:

  • What are we preoccupied with on this day of the Epiphany?
  • How is our faith in Jesus? Do we believe that Jesus is our King?
  • What do we bring to the Christ Child?
  • Are we holding anything back?
  • What might that be?
  • Will we be generous in our openness to the grace that the Lord offers us?
  • Will we leave his presence changed and determined to live our lives, in faith of course, with as much joy and happiness and concern for others whom we encounter?
